Although Apple turned down the Google Voice app, it appears the firm isn’t opposed to all attempts to avoid using AT&T’s services. It’s approved an app which allows cheap rate calls via the voice connection as well as over the internet.

RIM has issued a fix for a bug with the way BlackBerrys recognize secure Web sites which could have left users unaware of potential phishing scams. The firm has also released a Mac edition of its desktop management software for the device.

AT&T is demanding that all new smartphone buyers on its network subscribe to a previously optional data plan. It’s being billed as a way to help customers avoid unexpected charges, but may also be designed to cull unprofitable subscribers.

Verizon has cut the price of all but two of the smartphones on its network to $99. It appears to be a combination of responding to recent iPhone price cuts and clearing the way for some major new models.

Sprint has joined Verizon in announcing that all future handsets added to their network will have Wi-Fi enabled. While the firms are talking up the benefits to customers, it’s also a way to minimize strain on 3G networks.

A US consumer magazine’s rating of leading smartphones has perhaps predictably put the iPhone 3G S in top spot. But the surprising aspect of the rankings is just how close the performance of the various handsets was.
