Review: Nokia 6600 Slide – basic, small and comfortable

By John Pospisil

Review: Nokia 6600 Slide – basic, small and comfortable The Nokia 6600 is small form factor cell phone that comfortably slips into a jeans pocket. And while not a smart phone as such, it does offer a number of features, such as the ability to run apps and web browsing, which add functionality and allow you to keep connected to the online world while you’re out and about.

My wife instantly fell in love with the stylish, smooth good looks of the Nokia 6600, and its convenient size (90 x 45 x 14 mm). That’s not to say that the Nokia 6600 isn’t a perfectly respectable cell phone for a man. At 110 grams the phone feels solid, but not too heavy.

The Nokia 6600 achieves a small form factor through the use of a slide out keypad (as you can see below). The slide mechanism is comfortably smooth and works quite well. The keypad is perfectly usable, if not brilliant.

The 6600 has built in 3G internet, which means you can browse the web using the built-in Opera browser. And while this works, don’t expect an iPhone-like web browsing experience from the 240 x 320 pixel 2.2 inch screen. Basically, it’s only practical to access websites that offer a mobile version.

The screen is bright and easy to read, but I found it a little too small to look at for extended periods. Perhaps this is more a function of my tired old eyes, than the fault of the phone. And besides, you really couldn’t have a bigger screen and keep the same form factor.

The built-in 3.2 megapixel camera works well, and the dual LED photo lights mean you can take reasonable photos at night.

As mentioned, this phone can run apps and there are a number preloaded, one of the most interesting ones being Nokia Maps, which as the name implies, provides maps. However,  because the phone doesn’t have a built-in GPS, you need to enter the address of the area you want a map for.

While you can download extra apps from Ovi, be aware that the range is rather limited when compared to the likes of the Apple’s app store.

The Nokia 6600 works just fine as a phone, and for those who want a small, competent, well-built cell phone, that’s easy to carry around,  the Nokia 6600 Slide is a good choice, but those wanting lots of fancy features will need to look elsewhere.
