Microsoft has made clear that it won’t be producing a Zune-based challenger to the iPhone. The firm says it will stick to software on mobile devices and claims Windows Mobile 10 will outperform the iPhone on web browsing.

Motorola has announced its handset sales are down almost 50 per cent in the space of a year. The firm says the problem is that its range is too narrow and that adding more Android-based phones may revive its fortunes.

Britain’s second largest cellphone network operator says its staggering fees for mobile broadband customers who exceed monthly download limits are intended as a deterrent. The comments come after a survey found that only one in four mobile broadband customers knew the limits that applied to their contract.

Verizon is to carry the Palm Pre from early next year, contradicting Sprint’s implications that it had a long-term exclusive carrier deal. The new comes as Palm tries to use a technicality in the USB system to stop Apple blocking the device from hooking up to iTunes.

Best Buy lowered the price of the Palm Pre by more than half over the weekend. Unfortunately it turned out to be a mistake, albeit one which many were able to exploit.

An American firm has demonstrated a system which allows devices to recharge without being connected to the mains. The wireless technology can work on devices as large as a television set, but will have the most natural use for mobile devices such as laptops and smart phones.

An application developer has complained Palm’s recently released tools for developing apps for the Pre handset don’t give enough access for producing quality games. Ironically the complaints come as it emerged that Palm is looking for an engineer to produce frameworks for game development on the device.
