If you find yourself without power, the new Samsung E1107 Crest Solar cell phone may be just what you need.

Intended for the Asian, European, and Latin American markets, at least for now, the E1107 is one of the first commercial cell phones to hit the consumer market.  Promising 5 – to – 10 minutes of talk time for each hour of solar charging, if you aren’t a heavy user, this could be perfect for you.  Although do have to wonder if you leave it charging in the hot sun, you get a call, and you place it to your face if you will be leaving an imprint of the device on your face for a couple of days.

Beyond the solar charging this is a pretty basic handset.  It’s a dual-band (900/1800 MHz) GSM handset with a built-in FM radio tuner, MP3 ringtones and a flashlight function.  Beyond those standard features, there will be ones that are more region specific such as prayer reminders and a biking mode that will only let calls from predetermined numbers to ring through.  Two other odd features are an alert that goes out in case the SIM card is swapped out and a fake call feature to help you get out of an awkward situation.  The SIM feature is nice in case of theft, but considering how basic the phone is in general, the fake call feature seems a bit over the top.

While none of the press for this phone comes right out and says it, with the localizations mentioned, it is pretty obvious this phone is meant for areas where there is little to no power available for charging a traditional cell phone.  Why shouldn’t there be a phone like this?  Cell phones can be a life saver as much as they are a luxury, so the more people with phones, the better I say.  The new handset will start selling later this month the afore mentioned regions.
