Samsung Pixon 12 is a phone with an identity crisis

What do you get when you cross a 12 megapixel camera with a phone? You get the Samsung Pixon 12.

Samsung has announced that they are the first company to reach the 12 megapixel threshold for a camera phone.  That isn’t all that’s new on this phone, and there are honestly so many camera related points that you almost wonder if it does still make phone calls.

The Pixon 12 has a dedicated camera on switch so that you can jump directly to taking pictures with its 28mm lens.  Once you have the person or thing you want to take a picture of showing on the 3.1” screen, simply touch the point you wish to focus on, and the camera will then auto-focus to that item even if it does start moving across the shot.  If it is a moving target, you may have a bit of trouble following it as there is a 2-second write time for each image to the device’s 150 MB internal storage (expandable via MicroSD), so this is definitely going to be more static images when using the still photography features.

Course, if you really do need to catch a lot of moving action, you can always switch over to video recording which can be done at 720 x 480 pixels at 30fps.

Getting your images off the phone should be a snap with its built-in Wi-Fi.  You can then upload images to Samsung’s Sharepix service, and from there they can be moved over to popular services such as Flickr, Facebook and Picasa.

While the released information is heavy on camera information, there is brief mention that the phone will be quad-band for reception, but that really is about it for the phone side of the device.  Users who are looking for it will find it in Europe by the end of June, and in the rest of the world towards the end of August.

This new phone is sure to set off a race to see who can be the next to cram the most camera functionality into the smallest space while still being able to make a phone call, but you almost have to wonder which side is getting the most attention now.
